In “Landsknecht after Dürer” IRRLÆUFER takes up one of the most famous figures in Renaissance printmaking—the proud, martial mercenary—and transforms him into an existential darkness. The linocut formally references Albrecht Dürer’s linework, but the surroundings are radically reduced: The figure stands isolated against a deep black background, as if detached from time.
